In the last years, Gavin Herlihy has come around quite a bit. The Irish-born had moved from London to Berlin, he was the voice of a well-known podcast radio in Ibiza and now lives in Leeds. Obviously, his residences in London and Berlin have impressed him musically. After his 12″ debut “Machine Ate My Homework” on Sasse Lindblad’s label Moodmusic in 2006 has come down like a bomb not only in Europe but also in Japan, he attracted attention over the years with releases on Cadenza and Buzzin’ Fly and, last not least, he was responsible for the very first Cocoon-10″ (“Collect”). So it was time for him to deliver a more comprehensive musical business card on Cocoon. “Reality Maybe” presents Herlihy unfamiliarly housy with compressed percussive funk and an extremely distinctive bass line so that the subwoofer membranes will have a hard job to do. With its organ hook line and the programmatic vocals, “Stand for Something” adds exactly those elements that form a veritable club hit to that perfected modern House sound of the previous track. This is definitely already one of the absolute highlight-tracks on Cocoon this year. Also “You” shows not a trace of weakness, with its plucked bass and the melancholy Jazz elements, and thus meets Herlihy’s high quality standards in between futurism and tradition.
