The pairing of Andreas Baumecker (nd_baumecker) and Sam Barker (Voltek) seemed almost destined to result in some outstanding music. The fruits of a friendship and production partnership closely founded upon their love for more experimental dance sounds, the ‘Candyflip’ EP introduces the pair’s debut output. Straddling the boundaries between emotional, classically inspired techno and heavy broken beat electronics, ‘Candyflip’ comes across as a wonderfully analogue sounding tribute to well many spent years on the underground. Echoes of the past resound proudly throughout this touching, moody epic while stark, futuristic elements urge it forwards still. Stepping into ‘The Hole’, a darker sound takes precedence, as a deep tripping techno jam unfolds from the pair’s machines. As if recorded within the resonating concrete walls of Berghain itself, the dramatic and richly atmospheric DJ tool is a shining example of contemporary body music. ‘Refugee Hipster’ lets a heavy dub inspired theme blow smoke over the grooves in a gorgeous half-speed celebration of machine funk and absolute love for the genre. Warp’s wonder-kid Jimmy Edgar contributes a stunning keyboard solo, while washes of colourful texture, breathtaking subs and endless subtle details make it a perfect conclusion to Barker & Baumecker’s first release.

For those who found Matias Aguayo’s a cappella ramblings on Ay Ay Ay phonetically overwhelming but his skewed take on Latin-esque house intriguing, this varied EP of remixes ought to hit the mark. One might have imagined Kompakt to have compromised with more straight-shooting tech house takes from their old guard, but both versions hew close to Aguayo’s oddball vision, taking it in subtly divergent directions.
Norwegian cosmonaut Prins Thomas reins in his strobes, his Disco Version is one of his most synthetically-reduced and sympathetically arranged mixes to date. The big 4/4 kick and slap bass will ensure this sees more house play than anything off the album, but otherwise Thomas nonetheless keeps Aguayo to the fore, whistling bird-like trills, blowing rasberries, splitting into crazed babbling multiple-personalities, increasingly encouraged by bongos and tickled cowbells.
Vincenzo Sanfuentes smothering Aguayo’s slurred “Rollerskate” chant in exotica percussion, hinting at UK funky with a dinky digi-xylophone melody and berimba bass twang. Marked by offbeats, teases and syncopation it’s close to Aguayo’s original which, included as the B2, remains the most endearingly odd thing here.

Leipzig’s hidden gem Ron Deacon delivers the next output on Oliver Deutschmann’s growing Falkplatz label. With productions associated with the likes of Workshop or Farside to name a few, you can expect only the best from of this promising beat maker. ‘Sunday Walk’ starts things off slow with a long, drawn-out groover as the title suggests. You could say ‘Tune In’ is a direct continuation of the trip; maintaining the slow-mo vibe with a more focused approach. Sascha Dive picks up the tempo with his hot-headed edit of ‘Sunday Walk’. Its a darker and more energetic version that will shine in the bigger rooms, but is not limited to them. Amam’s grooving output has quickly established the label as a dependable source for the current sound of Italy’s house scene, with owner Alessio Mereu always involved with the music’s production in some form or another. Until now, that is! Amam Extra is the new sub-label for more melodic sounds from his friends. For its first release, Mereu has invited Milan’s Tobia Coffa of Grey Area Recordings for two original tracks, plus two remixes from Timid Boy and Marcus Vector.
With “Back from the Moon”, Coffa brings us a souvenir from his lunar vacation, with a plump, juicy bassline melody dusted with spacey synthesizers for a cosmic effect on the dancefloor. Parisian producer Timid Boy (TuningSpork, Time Has Changed, Darkroom Dubs) offers a deeper version that focuses more on rhythmic interplay than the melody of the original.
“Sweet” offers a more soulful sound, with relaxed melodies from Detroit laid over but pumping old-school Chicago percussion. Belgium’s Marcus Vector (Contexterrior, Toys For Boys) takes the sweetness of the original into more unfamiliar territories, twisting the romance into moody hypnotic house.
