One cannot appreciate the artistic approach of Onur Özer in its full depth without referring to his cultural origins. After all, Istanbul has been a place to meet and to exchange thoughts, not only regarding the trade between the continents, but especially regarding fine arts. So, it only seems consequent that Özer’s music instruments a location somewhere ‘in-between’. Since 2005, his tracks – and his acclaimed 2007 debut “Kasmir” – are released on the Berlin-based label Vakant and belong to the most exciting music that Techno had to offer over the last few years. No wonder that musicians like 2Raumwohnung and Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan have been counting on Onur’s remix talents. The brilliant opener of his 12″ debut on Cocoon Recordings, “Clavichord”, takes a Hammond-like organ sound as the starting point for what becomes a hard-to-catch and multi-rhythmic event, where the bass drum emerges not until the track is running already three minutes, forming a sheer vibrating fantasy of almost 12 minutes out of untamed energy that needn’t to be afraid of any comparison with the tracks of Ricardo Villalobos, for instance. The flipside “Oval” is drawing this bow further to an open reverb room that houses permanent layer sounds, choir and signal-horn sounds, as well as LFO impulses, before after five minutes the bass drum finally takes you by the hand. Futurist Techno that needs some time to listen to, but can also surprise you with sound sensations never heard before, even after playing the track a 100 times.

The track “Dawn’s Highway” from No. 7 of the 10″ collector’s series is a collaboration between the two Puerto Rican’s Jonny Cruz & Jojo Lati and Italy’s Simone Montomoli aka Simon Wish. Simon originates from Tuscany, but has lived in Miami for several years now. He is an inherent part of the Sleaze Tech posse around Maurizio Ruggiero, Daniele Campanga and Paolo Driver. Joel Latimer and Jonny Cruz have been friends since their childhood days, they both moved to Miami a few years ago and produce house music together, with a large catalogue of releases under different aliases spanning a variety of genres. The track “Dawn’s Highway” features aside from the production aspect a really funky and sexy vocal performed by Mr. Cruz, who just moved to Berlin this summer. For Jojo Lati, audio is part of his whole life. As a professional audio engineer he dedicates his life to manipulating sound or anything else that can be listened to. Their vinyl debut “Dawn’s Highway” perfectly illustrates the biographical culture clash – here, reduced percussive Tech Funk in the style of Marco Carola meets nasty vocals sounding like the old Chicago Trax while the sexy-elastic bass line makes the influences of the Florida metropolis abundantly clear…More popular over here, on the other hand, is Eric Estornel aka Maetrik. With his numerous releases for renowned labels from the likes of Treibstoff from Cologne, Dumb Unit and Steve Bug’s Audiomatique platform, the Texan who is now living in Valencia has proven to be one of the most reliable protagonists at the junction of straight House and Techno since the year 2000. “Snorkel” lives mainly from its level of tension that is consequently kept throughout the track: smoothly aspirated vocals provide just the right dash of Soul for a hypnotic strong work horse of a track that also repeatedly takes the pressure from the boiler by using noisy breaks. Cocoon have tapped Marco Carola and Nick Curly to mix Party Animals, a double-disc package supporting the label’s summer residency in Ibiza.
For his half of the mix, Carola showcases his lean and funky brand of minimal, with tunes by Martin Buttrich, Layo & Bushwacka and Neapolitan compatriot Joseph Capriati. Curly goes for a slightly more organic sound, with selections by Steffen Deux, Gorge and Sascha Dive evoking the balmy feel of Amnesia’s terrace. The compilation follows up last year’s Ten Years Cocoon Ibiza, mixed by Dubfire and Loco Dice, and marks the fourth edition of Cocoon’s pre-summer mix series overall.
